Here are a few questions that are asked frequently about fading or removing a tattoo.
How long does tattoo removal take?
The length of time is based on a number of factors: size, pigment color, and age are a few things we consider. Amateur tattoos usually require fewer sessions, while exotic inks require more time. It depends on the tattoo itself. Your office visit will be very brief but the time between visits will be determined by the removal plan Dr. Protain recommends. 6 to 8 weeks is usually required for your body to clear the ink particles between treatments. Large tattoos can be removed in sections and at regular intervals. Removing tattoos can be a lengthy process. Beware of "fast tattoo removal" promises. Tattoo removal done incorrectly can cause scarring or a bad reaction from your body's immune system.
What exactly happens when you remove a tattoo?
With modern Laser Tattoo Removal, most, if not all, scarring is eliminated. Each procedure involves a short time under the hand-held laser. After the procedure, the area that was removed may temporarily look red and puffy, or it may look white. Tattoos are a result of ink being deposited on several layers of the skin. The laser breaks up the ink into small particles then they are removed by you immune system. Within a few hours to days you'll be able to see that the tattoo has faded, but it won't be gone completely. Each procedure will remove more ink until the tattoo is removed.
Is tattoo removal covered by insurance?
No, tattoo removal is not covered by insurance- cash or credit only. We have affordable pricing with a variety of payment plans. We offer laser tattoo removal to fit your budget. Don't worry! We'll work with you to come up with the best plan of action. Don't forget to ask about our military, college, and first responder discounts. PLEASE NOTE: All pricing given is per session.
Do We Use A PicoSecond Laser?
No. PicoSecond Laser have been aggressively marketed by their manufactures and physicians who have purchased them. The reality is- despite costing approximately 300% more than the traditional Q-Switched nanosecond lasers, they have not been shown to be any more effective for tattoo removal in side-by-side medical studies.
Dr. Protain utilizes a Quality-Switched (Q-Switched) Laser that uses a top hat beam profile that reduces epidermal damage and transient textural change. This laser can remove nearly all colors of tattoo ink, almost anywhere on the body. This laser offers four separate wavelengths making it capable of removing darker inks (blacks, purples, browns), brighter inks (reds, yellows, oranges), plus stubborn pigments like blue-green tattoo ink. In a fraction of a second, the laser breaks down the pigment, allowing us to complete a conventional treatment in a short amount of time. Tattoo removal lasers do not infiltrate the lower layers of skin meaning that scarring is very rare and heals quickly.
Does tattoo removal hurt?
Getting a tattoo removed is a very similar feeling to getting a tattoo. The small amount of discomfort may be further reduced by topical numbing agents and our Zimmer Skin Chiller.
